monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just hang my bones on the Christmas tree...

Rachel is upstairs cleaning her room and putting things away to be stored in the closet or the attic for 18 months, and Kim is on the couch reading a book on the Depression.

Apparently Kim was complaining to Rachel yesterday about the problems with being in advanced classes, mainly that they have more work to do, and part of that work is that they are supposed to read a certain number of books from their reading list during the term. Rachel asked her what books are on the list, and Kim says there is nothing she wants to read, so today we demanded to see the list!

Some of the books are that terrible, depressing stuff that is considered "good" literature for children - books that have uplifting ideas and topics to help kids learn to deal with real life. Ugh, who wants to read that? I circled the books that I know we have in the house, and put stars by the ones I think she'll enjoy, and I told her that she has to turn off the TV at 8 o'clock every night so that she can read for an hour.

While we were talking about the books on the list, I estimated that we have a couple of hundred books in the den alone, so Rachel started counting them, and yes, there are two hundred books in the den, give or take a couple. That led us to think about all of the other books in the house, and a loose estimate is that there are about a thousand books here.

That includes Richard's old textbook collection that is upstairs in the yarn room, and is full of books he has never looked at, he just buys them at garage sales because he thinks they will helpful someday. Yes, it's crazy, and that, along with the piles of magazines on his side of the bed makes me certain that I will die in this house, an old lady surrounded by piles of Vanity Fair and Popular Mechanics going back to 1974. Unless they catch fire before then and I die in a magazine-fueled inferno.
