monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, Grandma, it will probably be fine enough to pass through a wedding ring.

Proof that I am too old for my iPod: Scott gave me a code for a free download and let me just say right here that he was hesitant to give it to me, knowing that I am not able to download, although he says itunes is so easy to use that 12 year old skateboarders can do it, and well, he was right, because I downloaded the free sample of indie music into NOWHERE because it certainly didn't appear in my library. Damn. Yes, the music probably did suck, but I'm still an idiot.

Kimberly had her first official driving lesson (with a teacher, not a white-knuckled mom) today after school, and she was waving her driving permit around afterward and asking when she can drive with us. I told her in the morning, with her dad, at 5:45 on the way to seminary when he is mostly asleep. Hah, too bad for him! She is planning to get it laminated tomorrow at school.

Rachel is feeling a little overwhelmed tonight. She hasn't even been engaged for a week and things are looking crazy already, what with the applying to nursing schools and not being sure where they will be living, and now his family wanting them to visit for a week here and a week there after they get married, like a Victorian couple on their wedding tour. I suggested that the bride sometimes took a younger sister with her on the wedding tour, but she just shook her head. Too bad, because Kim will be available for some traveling around that time.

Last night I was looking at my knitting projects and I'm down to one sock on the needles, and one Constant Companion bag just begun that is my peaceful bedroom knitting and I was wondering what to knit next, when Rachel suggested a wedding shawl!

I just happen to have ordered some lace weight alpaca and silk blend yarn from Knitpicks and the Vogue Accessorize book, with a plan of making the Trellis Shawl, so I started that today. It will be Something Blue for her to wear at the ring ceremony, and she is thinking of wearing baby blue Converse high tops, to match the shawl. The shawl is a beautiful color called Morning Mist.

Here's the thing; I am not a lace knitter. I like simple, mindless projects that I can do while reading or watching a movie. I'm not very good at sitting still, but if I'm knitting, I can sit for a long time, talking, listening, reading, ignoring irritating people, whatever. Also, knitting on size 1 needles for long periods of time is starting to take a toll on my hands, so I've been trying to take more rests while knitting, and also I have been working on projects with larger sized needles when I'm at home (I do the sock knitting at work). So I'm wondering if this shawl will be done in time for the wedding. Or at all.

I have 3 months to knit the shawl, so yes, it could happen. Wouldn't it be cool to make a shawl for Rachel to wear at her wedding that she could wrap a baby in later, to be blessed? So I'm giving it a try.

While I was swatching for the shawl (did I mention that I'm knitting with THREAD on TOOTHPICKS?), I had to endure Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy playing very loudly, and it was making me crabby. Later I took the knitting upstairs and worked on it in my quiet bedroom while Rachel talked on the phone to entertain me, and I got the first three rows done. Three rows. I'm going to be working on this for a long time.
