monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

Beware of endeavors that require new clothes.

Rachel and Kat are having second thoughts about their tour of Egypt, since the hostilities in the mid-east and Northern Africa have been escalating. They talked to the travel agent today, who insists that they will be just fine. They are not completely reassured, and also not completely happy with their travel agent, but since it is too late to get a refund, they are going to just hope for the best.

Rachel decided to buy some clothes for the trip, and even though we do not sew, she thought it would be a good idea to go to the fabric store and look at patterns, thinking that we could make a couple of longish cotton skirts for her. I was not so enthusiastic, but she said she would do the sewing and just ask me when she needs help (eek!), so we went, and we looked. 1. we didn't see anything inspiring, and 2. we found that patterns, which were about five dollars the last time I sewed, are now 15 dollars!

I suggested that Rachel could find something on eB*y and guess what? She found lots of stuff! She bought two skirts, a top, and a big tote bag. I think she bought boots, too, but I'm not sure. The skirts and the top look like the stuff a hippie traveling through Marrakesh in the 70s would have worn, so there you go, she'll have a nice retro hippie style, and I think I saw one of the Olsen twins wearing that look just last week.

To prepare for the trip, she's listening to Arab language websites, and also reading some Agatha Christie mysteries that take place in that area. She is going to be so ready! I think perhaps some Mrs Pollifax books might be a good idea, too, so she can be prepared to get herself and Kat out of any sticky situations with unsavory characters sporting heavy eyebrows and black mustaches, also. Isn't that how everyone prepares for travel? Read books that take place in the area that you are going to? I bought her two guides to Egypt, too.
