monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

Home at last.

Yeah, we thought Rachel would be getting home on Saturday, but she called at 4 in the afternoon and said that they were still standing in the customs line at JFK airport in NYC, and they were expecting to be in line for 6 hours, according to what they were hearing and their plane was taking off even as we were talking, and they were going to be getting another flight, but they didn't know when it would come in and they would call us as soon as they knew! She was crying a little as she talked to me, but she said she was just tired.

So two hours later they called and said they would be coming home tomorrow because that was the first flight they could get on, and the airline promised to put them in a hotel, but by the time they got their luggage and got back to the EgyptAir counter, the counter was closed! So they were very upset and had asked someone official for help but that person blew them off, and they were panicking. I told them to get some food and plan on sleeping in the airport and they would be fine. They said they had something to read, so you know, it was an adventure, except they were tired and upset.

Then I started making phone calls, to EgyptAir (closed), the Egyptian Connection, who was handling their travel arrangements (also closed, but I left a message in which I was very annoyed, but no one will get it until Monday), and I called Sarah and Chris, who have traveled a LOT, so I was hoping they would have a great idea! By that time, Rachel and Kat had found someone helpful, and they had their flight information for tomorrow, so I was giving that to Chris, who I'm sure would have leapt into action and saved the day, as he always does, but then Rachel said that they were also getting a hotel room at last, so whew! That was over!

Rachel called about 30 minutes later and the girls were in their hotel room and about to send out for pizza because they hadn't eaten since morning, and she said the beds were so much softer than the beds in Egypt!

They were going to be flying home on Monday, but then just as Rich and Kim were leaving to go to the airport, Rachel called and said they were on the plane but something was wrong with the nosewheel (?) and the flight was cancelled, so they had to stay over in NY again! So they went back to the hotel, did some laundry, ordered pizza, and went to sleep.

They finally arrived home Monday afternoon! Rachel brought home lots of cool stuff, including a canopic jar with a carving of a baboon on the lid for me! She had a great time and wants to go back again someday, and she says that camels make noises like wookies. Who knew?
