monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

In which an Old English Sheepdog plays the part of a Saint Bernard.

So tonight we were all in the living room, and I don't even know how it got started, but Rachel and I sort of taught Buffy how to be a Rescue Dog.

Ash kept playing Animal Crossing, and Rich went up to his office because he is Too Busy for such silliness, but Rachel got an old fanny pack from the closet and hung it around Buffy's neck. The waist belt part of it was too big, and we couldn't find a safety pin, so Rachel doubled the waistband over itself and sewed it down - she is so clever!

Buffy always comes home from the groomer wearing a seasonally-themed scarf around her neck, and bows on her ears, so she is used to humiliation wearing something, and she didn't mind having a fanny pack at all, because she is a dog, anyway, and doesn't care about fashion.

Rachel took the dog to the kitchen and put a can of Diet Pepsi in her pack, and told me to call Buffy. I called, and at first Buffy didn't respond, because she was in the kitchen, where the food is, and why would she want to leave? Rachel finally brought Buffy back to the living room, and slipped a piece of cookie to me so I could reward the dog for coming to me.

Whoa! There is food involved? Now Buffy was a lot more interested, and she happily galloped from room to room, as we called her name and then made her sit so we could take the can out of her pack, because she wanted some more of that delicious cookie! (Note: Buffy does not get cookies every day, so it was a rare treat.)

After she sat to have the can removed from the pack, she had to stay in position for us to replace the can in her pack, and then when she had gulped her piece of cookie, we would signal that she was ready, and another person called her to bring the can of pop.

After Buffy had delivered her can of pop all over the house, she was exhausted from all that running around, up and down the stairs, and we let her lay down for a while. Then Rachel made her do one last delivery to make sure she remembered how. Buffy did a good job, and got the last piece of cookie, and we decided to leave the fanny pack around her neck so she could get used to it.

It was time for my nap, so I went up to bed, and Rachel and Ash went home. When I woke up, it was almost time for me to leave for work. Rich was outside, taking the trash out to the garage, and Buffy was with him, but her fanny pack was laying on the couch. Apparently Rich doesn't think she needs to wear it all the time. When he's up in the office, thirsting for a Mountain Dew on a hot day, he's going to be glad we trained that dog to deliver one!
