monkeymom's Diaryland Diary

The ice queen.

I had three days off, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and I slept pretty good on Thursday and Friday nights, so by Saturday morning, I was rested and wondering what we could do for fun.

Rachel was having a bad week and her computer went wonky on about Thursday, and she tried this and that but couldn't fix it, and by Saturday morning she was feeling very frazzled and she sounded so upset that I thought maybe Rich should drive down there and fix her computer. I put the phone down and went to tell him what was going on, and before I finished, he said, "Do you want to go down there today and come back tomorrow?" Oh, ALL of us? Well okay then!

So we called Kim at the house where she had been at a sleepover on Friday night and let her know that we were coming to pick her up so we could leave town, and we packed and were ready to go in about an hour.

We had a good drive down, listening to The Order of the Phoenix on tape, and Kim slept almost the whole way (because she hadn't slept at the sleepover!). We went right to Rachel's apartment and Rich tried some fixing-type things, but finally we just left our laptop with her and brought hers back home with us. Rich had his work laptop with him, too, so I had that one to use in the motel.

We were planning to go to church in Rachel's ward and then drive back home, but we woke up to find that there had been a big ice storm during the night, that was still going on, and church was cancelled. Rachel had slept in the motel with us, so we all just watched TV and I knitted until checkout time.

The car was covered with a thick layer of ice, and we used a whole bottle of some ice-melting stuff that I had and that allowed us to get the front and back windows chipped off.

It took two hours to drive a distance that usually only takes one hour, and then we stopped for gas and a hamburger and chipped more ice off of the car because Kim was complaining that she couldn't see out her window - it was all iced over.

After another hour of driving we were out of the worst of it, and in another hour we were completely out of bad weather and the whole trip home only took about an hour more than usual.

The car is still coated with ice, and those buttons on the driver's side that allow you to unlock the car with a code are covered with a layer of ice, so you can't use them, but I never use them anyway. My car is the only one in the hospital parking lot tonight that is covered with a sheet of ice, but mine is also the only one that woke up in Edwardsville this morning.
